Custom Designed End Tables
Natural-Woodworks had the pleasure of making end tables for two clients recently. The first end table is made from tiles the client purchased in Jerusalem (the tiles are individual pieces) and the wood is solid walnut. The second table is also made from solid walnut and the insert is one solid marble piece from Ireland. This table was also made using solid walnut. Both tables are original designs hand crafted by Ron, in our Crownsville, MD wood shop. If you live in Baltimore, Annapolis, DC or VA please give us a call, we can make a special piece for you too.

Real Wood Furniture can be found at
craft fairs
I often think about going to an upscale craft fair to meet a lot of
good people looking to buy quality real wood
furniture. I know that when I
get to meet people face to face and they see the actual furniture that I have
produced and my passion for design and quality, it would be easier to pay the
price for a piece of real wood furniture. Granted, the Internet has been great for
business as you can reach so many people without even leaving the shop. But whatever happened to up close and
personal. After all, if you buy real wood furniture from a crafts man and not a
big box store, you really need to get to know the person who will be designing
and building for you. Do you share the
same design ideas, have similar personalities, and abide by the ethical, legal
and moral values needed to work together.
I truly believe that I would enjoy a weekend with potential clients and
explaining what types of wood and finishes and how I went about making a
special piece of real wood furniture. I understand the Sugarloaf Mountain Craft
Fairs are nice, I think I will look them up.
Hope to meet you in person soon.

What is
the definition for Solid wood furniture?
Solid Wood
means all exposed pieces of the furniture have been made from one solid
board. It means that all the wood used
to build your piece of furniture once lived in the woods as a tree and was
harvested for the sole purpose of making solid wood
furniture and no artificial product has been used in the assembling
process. No veneers or particle boards
are ever used anywhere when you are promised a piece of solid wood furniture.
When these types of boards are used in furniture construction, they are
glued together on top of the solid wood to appear as one piece of solid
wood. By following a seam to the end,
you can easily identify a veneer or particle board as the grain of the solid
wood will end. Many veneers are glued
over the edges to look like solid wood but don’t be fooled, always look very
closely if you suspect that a man made product has been used in conjunction
with solid wood make sure to get up close
and inspect the grain and make sure you do not see the grain end. Don’t be fooled by signs saying “All Wood
Furniture” that does not necessarily mean solid
wood furniture as a veneer or
particle board can be considered wood. Ask the person whom you are buying the furniture
from if the piece is truly solid wood. Furniture makers often use veneers or particle
board to lower the cost in producing the product. However, in the end, you have a good chance
that the piece that has been used will warp and pull away from the solid wood furniture creating the need for either
new furniture or a call to a repair man.
ALWAYS CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOUR SOLID WOOD
FURNITURE IS TRULY SOLID WOOD

Custom Built Desk
A couple in
Severna Park, Maryland found Natural Woodworks searching the internet for a
custom furniture builder. They were looking
for a custom built desk that would match an existing piece they had in their
home office. After meeting with them at
their home and providing them with a free estimate, they commissioned my
services to do the work. I immediately
got started by drafting a sketch of the desk for their approval. We
decided to make the desk from a combination of solid walnut and walnut vanier
to help keep the cost in their price range without compromising the final
product. The project took about three weeks
to complete, and when I delivered the furniture they were delighted. They are already trying to decide what type
of furniture they need next!

Restoring a 1905 Singer Sewing Machine
I received a call to look at an old sewing machine that had
been neglected and was subject to the weather for many years. The sewing machine belonged to my clients
grandmother and had a lot of sentimental value. I brought it to my Annapolis shop knowing this is
going to be a challenging restoration job.
Before I started I did research on exactly how this Singer sewing machine looked in
1905. With the center drawer missing I had to dig to find someone who knew just
what the draw looked like. Then, I took the cabinet apart and then I went to
work on each piece individually. With a lot of thought and ingenuity I began repairing,
replacing or refinishing the bulk of the components needed to be
refabricated. As you can see by the picture I am almost
ready to apply the finish. I can’t wait
to see my clients face when I deliver the finished product.
